This is a very effective tadpole imitation and catches big fish in stillwaters and streams.
The body is made of mink, hence the millionaire in the name. It originated with Harry Steward, a professional Scots fly tyer who moved to Zimbabwe and later to the Eastern Cape. See his story on Tom Sutcliffes website.
How to fish the Millionaires Taddy Fly
- Fishing a millionaires taddy is not just for there are tadpoles around, fish recognise tadpoles even off season, and it also looks a bit like a leech.
- It can be fished on all types of lines, depending on the depth you wish to keep the fly.
- On streams, a floating line with a down and across technique is effective.
- In dams, tadpoles tend to stay in shallow water where there is cover, so fish along the drop-offs, using the appropriate line.
- Can be used for trout, carp and yellowfish
How to tie a Tadpole Fly
- When tying a tadpole fly, obviously using mink is best, but substitutes can be used.
- Rather make a dubbing loop, than tie the mink directly onto hook shank, it will give you the nice slim profile that you are looking for.
- Use a long shank hook like the barbless Hanak H290, or the barbed Hanak H25X.
- The tail is made from marabou and a few strands of krystal flash to match
- Choose a light thread to match the colour of body
- Once mink brush is done, go to the back of fly and then to the front with wide gapped turns
- This will strengthen your fly
