A controversial fly that can be very effective. Although some claim they imitate a caddis or other insects, they don't really. This is a fly like the blob fly that just works, and I don't think anyone can explain why. It doesn't always work, but when it does it's a killer. It is usually most effective when fish are not feeding.
It is fished in rivers and streams in all kinds of flows, usually with a buoyant indicator fly.
In stillwaters use it to get down low, or into the middle column where trout are intercepting rising insects.
The Mop Fly for Trout Fishing originated with Jim Estes who found the material in a local dollar store. It is also known as the Mitt Fly.
If you tie your own, you can get a lot of mop chenille colours here, many more than you will get at the local store.
